Calauit Game Preserve & Wildlife Sanctuary in Palawan - Philippines
Calauits location in the northwestern part of Palawan was proclaimed as a game preserve in 1977 by the Marcos government as the Philippines answered the call of the IUCN (International Union of Conservation of Nature) to help save the endangered and nearly extinct animals in the African continent. The sanctuary is a natural and peaceful setting where animals and plants are permitted to live naturally with minimum human involvement.
In order to preserve the Calauit sanctuary for the next generations, tourists are required to strictly follow the visitor rules and regulations stated in Palawans National Integrated Protected Areas Act. The three thousand seven hundred hectares wildlife preserve of Calauit is home to local animals and animals from Africa.
In the beginning, around 8 species of animals from Kenya like zebras, waterbucks, elands and other live together in harmony with the islands native animals like the Palawan bearcat, Philippine crocodile, Peacock pheasant and others. The wildlife sanctuary also helps the province earn additional income especially with safari lovers.
The African Animals numbers have improved from 100 to more than 600 hundred as they adapt in their new home. The impalas and the waterbucks from Kenya achieved the first two biggest population growth in the sanctuary. Acceptable increases in the population of the other African animal species were also achieved except for the gazelles and the topi.
These two groups of animals have the highest number of mortality during the initial stages of adapting to their new environment. Calauit is also the home of more than 70 kinds of birds, ten of them can only be seen in the island. These birds return 2 hours before the sun goes down back to the island after flying around whole day.
The Calauit Sanctuary is an inspiration to every Filipino. This preserve is home to animals from Africa co-existing with the indigenous animals of Palawan. Access around the island is possible by trekking or riding a vehicle. Small rivers can be found around the island but most of these bodies of water are dry during summer time. However, some springs have a water supply throughout the year.
