Taiei Maru(Concepcion Wreck) in Palawan - Philippines
While there are many WWII shipwrecks in Palawan that have become famous dive sites all across the globe, divers cant help but pick out their favorites. At the top of everyones list are the Irako Wreck and the Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck).
Its actually a toss-up between the two as to which one gets the top spot. The Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) is also known as the Okikawa Maru Wreck.
Location
The Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) is located in Concepcion Village, Busuanga Island at coordinates 12*.01.18 N and 119*.58.176 E; close to the outer edge of the pearl farm here.
It is about 160 to 168 meters in length and weighs approximately 10,000 tons and is deemed as the biggest shipwreck in the islands of Palawan.
What to See
The Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) lies in a perfect upright position with its bow almost totally broken off, where the bombs hit the ship. The boat is completely covered in corals and divers can explore almost the entire ship, with its large holds that you can easily swim through.
You can see damselfish, snappers, batfish, scorpion fish and fusiliers swimming past you as you explore the ship plus plenty of other species particularly along the hulls of the boat. Divers will also get a chance to swim through the propeller shafts, cabins, and also view the oil tanks.
Depth/Experience Level Required
The Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) has a maximum depth of 26 meters and the recommended levels of certification are: Open Water Diver for those exploring only the outer deck without current; Advanced Open Water for diving with current; and Experienced Advance Open Water Diver for diving under strong currents.
Deep penetration requirement is Wreck Specialty.
Travelers are advised to check the currents first prior to diving.
Cost
Diving down to explore the Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) will cost somewhere between Php 1,700 for a single dive to Php 2,200 up to Php 2,700 for two dives and Php 3,000 to Php 3,950 for three dives.
Travelers are likewise advised that prices may slightly vary depending on the number of dives and your choice of a dive center. The costs usually cover use of equipment and transportation to the dive site; plus entry fees.
Additional Information
The Taiei Maru (Concepcion Wreck) was an oil tanker of the Japanese Navy which was believed to be floating for three weeks following a US air attack. It was finally sunk down on October 9, 1944 after another US air strike that hit its bow.
